After watching the events of the December 26, 2004 tsunami in the southern regions of Asia, day after day on television, I was overcome with a need to go and help in anyway that I could.Next thing I knew I was on a plane on my way to a far off place called Sri Lanka.Ihad know idea how this would change my life in so many ways.
With no knowledge of where I was headed, I ended up in the southern district of Galle in the town of Hikkaduwa.Iwas told of a guest house in town and found it to house some of the greatest people I have had the pleasure of meeting in this life, among them was the Israeli Relief Team.
After getting to know many of them ,Myself as well as a Kiwi friend ,who was also there on his own, were asked to help with a few small projects by a young Israeli woman .It was the start of a year long journey with this team from the holy land.
From digging holes in the hard earth to erect poles for shaded areas,so the people of the IDP camps could take time out of the incredible heat of the day,to distributing food ,diapers books ,mattresses and other essentials, watching the children smile ,some for the first time since there world was turned upside down. The Israeli team was amazing to watch and work with. Their energy and laughter was contagious, not to mention their professionalism.
Many things were needed after the wave, and being there and part of it was truly a humbling experience.
From building temporary shelters to permanent homes, opening livelihood projects for women, to getting fisherman back to the sea, and watching as children went back to schools with new book bags and books, and smiles. Opening libraries with computers in places that never had this access before, Health clinics for pregnant women in villages far from hospital. Of all the experiences I had in Sri Lanka,my most special project was rebuilding a school in the town of Balapitya, working alongside a very special Israeli woman, with the energy of ten people and a smile ,and heart that could melt the sun.She accomplished changing the lives of many children ,by remodeling their school ,adding a science lab , library , eco-playground and turning a run down mess into a beautiful school the children as well as there parents ,teachers, and the community could be proud of.
The Israeli people along with the world and the people of
