The following summary was prepared for the Israeli parliament prior to a meeting of the Committee on Labor, Welfare, and Health

The importance of volunteer organizations, for both the economy and society, has grown in the past years both in Israel and throughout the world. Volunteer organizations fulfill a key role in a range of important activities. The volunteer movement in Israel is seen as the basis for social development. The unique characteristics of Israeli society - including the fact that it is composed of many different ethnic and religious groups - means that volunteer groups have an important role in bridging social and cultural gaps, in absorption of immigrants, and in health and welfare.
