Journey to gorgeous Peru where you will not only provide humanitarian aid to underprivileged children but will also get the chance to improve upon your Spanish language skills! The project is located in South-Eastern Peru in Cusco – a World Heritage Site as well as the historical capital of the Incan Empire and near to the Sacred Valley of the Andes Mountains. Being South America’s third-largest country, Peru shares borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and of course the Pacific Ocean!
Orientation and Spanish Course
During orientation, volunteers will receive a welcome package and partake in various recreational activities and tours throughout the area.
Orientation includes a 2 week long intensive Spanish course which will consist of 40 55-minute classes with no more than 5 students in each class to assure you’ll receive utmost attention. You’ll learn alongside other volunteers who are at the same level as you to assure improvement upon your conversational, reading and writing skills. Those who are fluent in Spanish can choose to skip the course though this is not recommended as this is an enjoyable way to familiarize yourself with the area and other people who you’ll be working with.
There are many different projects to which you may be involved during your stay. Volunteers should expect to work between 4 and 6 hours a day, Monday through Friday. You will have a choice of what project you will work on:
Health Center – Peru’s healthcare system is one of the most underfunded and resource-lacking in all of South America and many Peruvians are simply unable to afford health insurance. This project works with a senior citizens home and two clinics within a number of areas; general medicine, dentistry, psychology, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, ophthalmology, obstetrics, gynecology, X-ray and Andean Medicine. This project also has a clinical laboratory and pharmacy. The work you will partake in will vary depending upon your level of experience in the medical field. There is much work to be done for those that are medically trained and those who are not.
Kindergarten – These centers provide a safe place and care for disadvantaged and underprivileged children from in and around Cusco. Each kindergarten has about 35 children from 3-5 years old. Though these centers have very few resources, it is our aim to teach in a way that is both fun and enjoyable to the children.
Children's Home – In Cusco there are many children whose parents either have abandoned them or are without the means to provide for them. Spend quality time at one of the orphanages, providing affection, education and vocational support to these children in need. Each home has up to 65 children ages 6-20.
Youth Rehabilitation Center – The youth at these centers range in age from 12-20. Help them to achieve a brighter future away from crime. Assist in various lessons and workshops carried out by the center’s staff. Topics include: personal values and development, drug addiction, alcoholism, health, sexual health, employment, cultural identity, the environment and computing. In this project volunteers could also be involved in different activities with the youth such as performing arts, crafts and sports.
