Come to South Africa and work with vulnerable and at-risk children who have been orphaned or taken from the street with the hopes of providing them with a better life. Volunteers have the opportunity to make an impact on these children's lives, keep them off the street, improve their education, and give them hope for their futures. The volunteers here are invaluable, as they provide these children with a positive role model to look up to, a mentor who believes in them and their futures.
Your work at this project can be divided into any of the below orphanage programs.
Home for children from the streets: an all-boys home which acts as a bridge between the streets and regular community life. These boys are placed here as a last resort because, due to a variety of tragic reasons, cannot return home. Here, you will assist in homeschooling the children, create lesson plans with the teacher, come up with creative and new ways to teach different concepts, help the kids to integrate into society so they can eventually return to a traditional school setting.
Emergency care home for abandoned and orphaned children: a home for children ages 0 – 8 that aims to find a stable foster home for these children as soon as they are ready. Unfortunately, this often takes time as it is estimated that about 60% of the children brought here are HIV+ and must first be treated and stabilized before moving on to a more permanent location. Your duties here will involve entertaining the children, helping to prepare the younger children for school by stimulating development to make the transition into preschool as easy as possible.
After school care: this after school program was created as a result of the increasing number of at-risk youth returning to empty homes after school. It is divided into 5 age groups ranging from toddlers to teenagers. You will assist by providing reading support and homework help, organizing outdoor activities such as gardening or arts and crafts.
Volunteers may choose to spend part of their days assisting other initiatives in the area, including sports development, teaching, dance, and healthcare.
