Guatemala: Antigua Childcare and Community

This project works with a variety of placements focused on improving the lives of impoverished and disadvantaged children in the local communities. Volunteers will have the option to choose their specific placements, with options to work with organizations that contribute to different aspects of child development and community assistance. The project includes placements in day care centers, rehabilitation centers for disabled children, and community centers for impoverished families.

Daycare center for children of single moms:

Volunteer with an organization that provides single moms with a safe place to leave their kids for the day while they are out providing for their family. Help provide these mothers with the support and reassurance that their kids are being well taken care of and stimulated during the day.

Volunteer duties will include:

  • Helping children with homework
  • Assisting with setup and cleanup of activities, snack time, and meals
  • Raising vital funds for the organization
  • Preparing recreational and educational activities
  • Helping teachers and other volunteers with their daily tasks
  • Teaching about your culture

Center for disabled children:

Provide care and support to mentally and physically disabled children (and some adults) in the underserved communities of Antigua. Volunteers will be working alongside professionals to make an impact in these people's lives through constant medical, psychological, and emotional support. This center is run by a mixture of international volunteers and professionals to create a well-rounded care center providing services such as medical assistance (with free medication), dental care, physiotherapy, speech therapy, nutrition and hygiene education, and career counseling.

Volunteer duties will include:

  • Assisting in rehabilitation activities
  • Looking out for the overall well-being of the center's patients
  • Working on maintenance projects
  • Preparing recreational and sports activities

Culture and education center:

Volunteer for an organization that aims to give underprivileged children a well-rounded education and empowers them by inspiring higher self-esteem, ambition, and productivity. Contribute your efforts toward this organization's overall goal to give these children the opportunities and drive to become upcoming leaders and contributing members of their communities.

Volunteer duties will include:

  • Preparing educational material
  • Teaching English
  • Helping with homework
  • Leading extracurricular activities such as dance, art, theater, music, and/or sports
  • Teaching children about your culture and home country
